American Heart Month

CenterLight Healthcare PACE is committed to sharing resources to help our participants and community members stay healthy.

February is American Heart Month. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 877,500 Americans pass away from heart disease, stroke, or other cardiovascular diseases every year. Heart disease and stroke are the first and fifth leading causes of death in the United States.

It’s important to know your risks and treatment options for heart disease.

Individuals at increased risk include, but are not limited to:

  • Women over 55

  • Men over 45

  • People with a family history of heart disease

  • Smokers

  • Individuals with other conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes

  • Men over 45

  • Smokers

  • Individuals with other conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes

What can you do to promote heart health? Some ways to keep your heart healthy include:

  • Staying active. Ask your rehabilitation therapist about what exercises are right for you.

  • Eating healthy. Talk to your dietitian to learn about a healthy diet and other nutrition information.

  • Quitting or avoiding smoking.

  • Controlling your cholesterol and blood pressure.

  • Avoiding alcohol or drinking only in moderation.

  • Managing stress.

Remember to see your medical provider regularly so that they can monitor your health and your risk for heart disease.

You may also speak with your social worker, therapeutic recreation specialist, or other medical professional for tips on managing stress and other ways you can keep your heart healthy.

Taking steps to take care of your heart is one of the ways that you can keep up with the pace of aging.
