Hepatitis B Vaccine

Staying up to date on all of your routine vaccines is an important step that you can take to keep you and your loved ones safe and healthy. Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued new guidance on hepatitis B vaccinations.

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, Hepatitis B is a viral infection that causes liver inflammation and damage. Inflammation is swelling that occurs when tissues of the body become injured or infected. Inflammation can damage organs. The virus, which is called hepatitis B virus (HBV), can cause lifelong infection, cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver, liver cancer, liver failure, and death.

The Hepatitis B vaccine can help prevent Hepatitis B and is available for all age groups. The CDC recommends the hepatitis B vaccine for children (see the CDC website for specifics), all adults aged 19 through 59 years, and adults aged 60 years or older with risk factors for hepatitis B infection. Adults 60 years or older without known risk factors for hepatitis B may also receive the hepatitis B vaccine.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices suggested that all adults be vaccinated for Hepatitis B. The recommendation specifies that 2, 3, or 4 HBV vaccine dosages could be used, depending on the vaccine or condition of the patient.
