Eating Healthy During The Holiday Season!

CenterLight Dietitian Kaitlyn Hempfling spoke on CenterLight’s Facebook page about how to eat healthy during the holiday season.

The holiday season is officially here! When celebrating with friends and family this holiday season, it's important to be mindful of what we eat.

We recommend the following tips:

  • Eat at your normal mealtime. Eating at your normal mealtime helps make sure you are not hungrier than normal and helps you avoid overeating.

  • Adjust your recipes. Try to cut down on the amount of butter or milk used to make some of your favorite dishes a little healthier.

  • Drink water or some lowered-calorie options. Drinking water or zero calorie drinks helps to avoid unnecessary calories.

  • Eat fruits or vegetables as appetizers. Having a lighter appetizer will help you save your appetite for dinner.

  • Peel the skin of the turkey. Peeling the skin off the turkey saves a lot of calories and cuts off additional fat.

  • Wait to eat dessert. Waiting to eat dessert allows your stomach to settle.

  • Chew your food well and eat slowly. Eating slowly helps you enjoy your meal more and have better digestion.

  • Balance your food choices. Try to make half of your plate fruit and none starchy vegetables.

  • Use smaller plates. Using smaller plates allows for better portion control.

  • Keep serving dishes away from the table. Moving the serving dishes away from the table cuts down on the likeliness of overeating.

  • When the meal is over, box up the leftovers. Putting the food away prevents overeating.

Following these tips allows you to eat smart and avoid overeating!
