Helping Regain or Improve Life Skills: Rehabilitation Services

After an accident or a serious health event, or as part of their long-term care, people often need rehabilitation services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy or speech therapy. In this part of our “Explainer Series,” we discuss the rehabilitation services an individual may receive as part of a PACE program.

In a PACE program, Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapists are part of the Interdisciplinary Team, a group of dedicated healthcare professionals who work together to provide participants with the care they need, when they need it.

Physical Therapy (PT)

Physical therapy helps participants reduce pain and improve or restore mobility - in many cases without surgery, and often reduces the need for long-term use of prescription medications.

Physical therapists can teach participants how to prevent or manage their condition so that they may achieve long-term health benefits. PTs examine each participant and develop a plan, using treatment techniques to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability. PTs also work with participants to prevent the loss of mobility before it occurs by developing fitness and wellness-oriented programs for healthier and more active lifestyles.

Occupational Therapy (OT)

Through the therapeutic use of everyday activities (occupations), Occupational Therapists (OTs) help participants do the things they want and need to do.

Common occupational therapy interventions include helping participants recovering from injury to regain skills, and providing supports for those experiencing physical and cognitive changes.

Speech Therapy

Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs), also known as speech therapists, work to prevent, assess, diagnose and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders in children and adults. These disorders usually happen as a result of an illness, stroke, traumatic brain injury, or dementia, although they can also be congenital. SLPs assess speech, language, cognitive-communication, and oral/feeding/swallowing skills to identify types of communication problems and create strategies for the best way to treat them.
