Fun with a Purpose: Therapeutic Recreation

When sickness hits, it’s difficult as an older adult to have the energy, focus, or even the ability to go back to the things they once loved to do. Therapeutic Recreation and socialization can lead to emotional, cognitive, and physical benefits. In this installment of our “Explainer Series,” we discuss the role of the Therapeutic Recreation Specialist in a Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE).

Therapeutic Recreation staff helps individuals find ways to take part in activities they once enjoyed or to find new activities they didn’t even know they could do. They may also help with other Physical or Occupational Therapy treatments.

COGNITIVE BENEFITS

Creative pursuits, like painting, strategic thinking, like playing cards or board games, can provide stimulation that can help improve memory, as well as cognitive and reasoning skills.

Emotional Benefits

Via stress relief, improved self-confidence and socialization.

Physical Benefits

Depending on the activity, participants may increase endurance and energy levels, range of motion of joints, eye-hand coordination, fine and gross motor skills, flexibility and strength.

Therapeutic Recreation in the time of COVID-19

In PACE, Therapeutic Recreation is traditionally offered at PACE centers and/or alternative care settings. When the COVID-19 pandemic happened, Teamcare, CenterLight Healthcare’s PACE program, closed our physical locations except for clinical needs. This precaution was implemented to help keep our participants safe. It was then that we started offering online recreation activities to help participants and community members stay active and engaged in the comfort of their home. By tuning in virtually, participants enjoy at least three activities per day including bingo, “Name That Tune,” music programs, educational talks and daily falls prevention exercises. Teamcare developed this material to help educate individuals regarding what therapeutic recreation services may be available in PACE programs.
