National Cancer Prevention Month

February is National Cancer Prevention month. The CenterLight Healthcare PACE team would like to remind everyone about the importance of preventative care.

According to the New York State Department of Health, early detection saves lives. Preventative cancer screenings have helped lower the U.S. cervical cancer death rate by more than 50% in the last 30 years. Across the nation, mammograms prevent 12,000 deaths each year. If men and women followed colorectal cancer screening guidelines, 33,000 lives would be saved each year in the U.S.

The data is clear that early detection is critical in increasing the chances of treatment and minimizing diseases from getting worse.

We recommend that older adults consult their primary care provider to discuss what health screenings they need and how often they should get screened. Cancer screenings may include blood work, mammograms, colonoscopies, and other tests.

By taking a preventive approach and being proactive, you can take control of your health.
