Summer Fun!

Summer is here, and at CenterLight, we want you to have a safe and fun summer! Our Therapeutic Recreation Team has created a list of fun activities you can do all summer long to take advantage of the warm weather. Please consult your doctor or care team to ensure what activities are advised for you.

Plant a garden

Gardening is a great activity for people of all ages and has many therapeutic benefits. At many of our CenterLight PACE centers and ACS locations, participants engage in horticulture therapy by growing and tending indoor houseplants, as well as flowers, vegetables, and herbs in outdoor raised garden beds and containers.

Play puzzles

During days when it’s too hot to safely so outside activities and it’s recommended to stay in airconditioned places, puzzles are a great way to spend the time. Jigsaw, word search games, crossword puzzles, and sudoku are fun and can help maintain and enhance one’s cognitive function.

Go for a walk to a local park

Local parks are beautiful places to enjoy nature and relax during good summer days. Taking a walk to a favorite local park is a great way to get outside in the open air and exercise one’s legs during the day.

Go to the beach

The sound of ocean waves on the beach creates a calming atmosphere. Days spent at the beach aren’t simply relaxing, but enjoyable as well with activities such as walking along the shoreline, feeding birds, and collecting seashells.

Paint seashells and make your own seashell photo frames

After gathering those shells at the shore, bring them home for an entertaining arts and crafts project. Shells can be painted or arranged over popsicle sticks to personalize the frames of favorite photos.

Create a Summer Playlist with your favorite songs that remind you of the summer

Whether using Spotify, Apple Music, or collecting records of popular artists, there are many ways to create a playlist and fill it with music that reminds us of happy summer days. A summer playlist can be listened to anywhere—inside, outside, on a walk through the park or to the beach. Please ask your Therapeutic Recreation Specialist or family member for assistance if needed.

Tie-Dye T-Shirts & Bandanas

Personalized t-shirts and bandanas can express one’s creativity and style and are perfect to gift to others. Tie-dyeing these pieces is a fun and easy activity to update your wardrobe and add some light pieces for the warm weather.

Play indoor beachball or hold an indoor volleyball tournament

Getting active despite the heat is important, and bringing sports inside is a nice way to combine athletic activity and summer weather. Indoor beachball or a small volleyball tournament encourages the use and exercise of the arms and one’s natural dexterity. Make sure to consult your care team regarding what types of sports are advised for you.

Exercise with Chair Yoga, Zumba & Tai-Chi

Chair Yoga, Zumba, and Tai-Chi are all exercises that employ the full scope of one’s body in amusing activity. They can take place either indoors or outdoors and have been shown to improve balance among participants.

Make Your Own Fruit Smoothie

The juicy fruits of summer are in season, and a great way to use them is in making colorful fruit smoothies to sip on. Fruit smoothies aren’t simply delicious, but they provide nutritional benefits such as supplementing vitamins and fiber to one’s diet.

Make Your Own Fruit Infused Water and/or Iced Tea

After a day of engaging activities or relaxation in the sun, a cool glass of fruit infused water or iced tea is the perfect way to send away the heat. Fill a pitcher with water and some choice fruit or iced tea mix, and soon enough there will be a delicious beverage to enjoy.
